Preliminary Impressions

One of the most common procedures in prosthodontics is the preliminary alginate impression, and one of the most common procedures done incorrectly. The problem with this step being done incorrectly is that since it is the first step in many multi-step processes it has negative downstream consequences. The most common downstream consequence of an incorrect preliminary impression is overextended dentures, leading to multiple follow up appointments for sore spots in the vestibules.

In this video, a classic technique is provided to make a preliminary alginate impression preparatory to making a custom tray.
